DALLAS – November 14, 2017 – After a successful pilot project, Smart Outdoor Services, Inc. announces the expansion of its relationship with one of the largest homeowner associations in the state of Texas.
Located on over 5,000 acres in McKinney, TX, the Stonebridge Ranch Community Association features over 500 acres of common space, 13 parks, multiple lakes and ponds, and a portfolio of amenities including various pools and sports courts in addition to over 9,200 homes. To stay ahead of rising costs associated with a drought-sensitive region, and to demonstrate greater environmental responsibility for limited natural resources, the Stonebridge Ranch Community Association partnered with Smart Outdoor Services (SOS) to evaluate its extensive greenbelt and open spaces and look for ways to reduce water use. The goal was to proactively make systems more efficient to stay ahead of the next period of water restrictions, while preserving the beautiful landscape aesthetic that Stonebridge Ranch homeowners have come to expect and appreciate.
SOS initially evaluated water usage on 10 of their highest-use water meters and retro-fitted existing equipment with newer, customized technology. The Association reduced its water use by 54% in year one, and 53% in year two (representing approximately $200,000) on those 10 meters alone. The reduction in irrigation consumption measures over 24 Million gallons of water. Additionally, the Association recaptured its investment in less than 2 years, ahead of schedule, with supplemental cash savings.
“We could not be more pleased with the results of our two-year pilot study at Stonebridge Ranch HOA,” states Greg Herbst, Director of Operations, RTI/Community Management Associates, Inc. “From day one, the SOS team has been thorough, helpful and cooperative with everyone involved in pursuing changes to our water use attitudes and structures. It is showing, too, through the substantial savings we have achieved with them. I look forward to growing our portfolio of savings by expanding their strategies to other meters on property.”
SOS is now tasked to continue the monitoring and replacement of all of the community’s eligible irrigation controllers, utilizing the money saved to further invest in technology and services. These enhancements are expected to save the Association over 25% on average, over 5-year average water consumption. SOS will remain the community’s irrigation water management consultants, working closely with the landscape maintenance companies that work onsite, and helping to continue carving out water savings while preserving landscape health. By re-investing savings into better equipment, SOS is significantly lowering the Association’s capital costs.
“When we heard what the projected savings was going to be in our first year of working with Smart Outdoor Services, I was skeptical that we could achieve the projected savings without all of our turf turning brown and our other landscaping looking stressed,” commented Jon Dell’Antonia, President of the Board of Directors of the Stonebridge Ranch Community Association. “Our common areas here at Stonebridge Ranch have never looked better. You could not look around this property and believe we could be saving water because the landscape looks as healthy as it always did. The great part is, we recovered our initial investment in less than two years, saving over 50% with no landscape loss.”
Founded by two veteran water managers, Amanda and John Griffin, SOS is a leader in water management, horticultural application, consultation services and education, committed to creating a savvier irrigation consumer.
“When we started out almost 15 years ago, we saw a real need for active water management,” states Amanda Griffin, President of Smart Outdoor Services. “We wanted to change not only the way landscape water is used, but how it is perceived as the deciding factor in landscape success. Today there is a landscape-down approach to environmental management, but what is needed in this day and age is a sprinklers-up approach, to balance plant health with the use of a very precious resource. As the droughts persist, populations continue to expand, and water rates continue to increase, it benefits properties large and small to be more mindful and analytical towards their water usage and how they can improve the overall metrics.”
Smart Outdoor Services, Inc. – a woman-owned business – has actively carved this water conservation niche out for themselves by promoting smart water technologies, active water management, and education for practitioners as well as end users about proper sprinkler conditions and strategies.
